Expired??

I raided the fridge earlier, looking for something to snack on. All I found was a bunch of raw stuff, and some weird stuff (edible, thankfully) my mom keeps that she uses once in a blue moon in her cooking. The closest I came to achieving what I was looking for was a few bars of chocolate, which were bought ages ago (KLIA duty free on the way back from Australia) and also some which were given by friends. Somehow they are all kept in the fridge and then long forgotten, until a day like this were I need something to munch on comes about and then they have expired by now! So I was searching the net for "How safe is it to eat expired chocolates kept in the fridge?" and I found this! hehehe...interesting...

How long will it last?
Posted March 26, 2007

Sure, it sounds like the title of a new hit game show on NBC with Howie Mandel, but it’s not. It’s the game all of us play with our refrigerator.

I never know how long something lasts and I almost always have leftovers. I keep them in the fridge for a good week or two, then I carefully open it up, hoping it doesn’t release a some disgusting odor (which it often does) or even worse, hoping that the disgusting odor juices don’t end up splashing me in the face upon opening it.

So after some investigating (and a little help from AskMen.com) here’s what you need to know.

1. How long do apples last?
You can enjoy weeks and weeks of apple bobbing parties with these hardy fruits; if stored in a cool, dry area (the basement and the fridge drawer are always good picks), apples can last anywhere between 3 to 6 months.

2. Is it better to keep bread out on the counter or in the fridge?
If you want your bread to stay fresh, then keep your loaf on the counter at room temperature; refrigerating bread may halt the growth of mold, but it will dry bread out and cause it to become stale more quickly. If you want to store bread, however, you’re better off sticking it in the freezer.

3. How long do eggs last?
Long enough for a month of omelets. Fresh eggs, in their shell, can last in the fridge for 4 to 5 weeks after purchase.

4. Does hard cheese last longer than soft cheese?
Hell yeah! The “rock” of cheeses, hard cheese lasts for 3 to 4 weeks after being opened, whereas soft cheese lasts for about one week after being opened.

5. How long does an open box of cereal last?
You can look forward to several blissful months of waking up to the Cap’n. Cap’n Crunch, that is; an open box of cereal will remain edible for about 2 to 3 months in a dry room. A humid home, on the other hand, spells a shorter shelf life for your favorite box of cereal.

6. Is milk any good after the expiry date?
This really isn’t something you want to discover for yourself. Milk should definitely be chucked after it has expired. The nutrients and vitamins in milk start to diminish after opening, so besides giving you the stomachache of your life, drinking expired milk won’t really do your body any good.

7. How long do TV dinners last in the freezer?
These convenient marvels of modern living will last in the freezer for about 6 months; check the expiry date on the package just to be sure.

8. How long can you keep cooked burgers on the counter?
Whether it’s been barbecued, baked, fried, or thrown on a hot sidewalk in the middle of a heat wave, cooked meat shouldn’t be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. After 2 hours, human-unfriendly bacteria starts to grow on the meat, making it an unhealthy, highly unpleasant snack and all-around bad idea to mess with.

9. How long does raw steak last in the freezer?
You’ve got almost a year to eat like a real man. Raw steak will last up to 12 months in the freezer.

10. How long do cold cuts last?
For less time than you think. I once knew a guy who ate lunchmeats dotted with blue spots… he hasn’t been the same since. To avoid drastically altering your fated life path, throw away an open package of cold cuts after 3 to 5 days, and send cold cuts stored in a tightly-sealed container packing after 10 days.

11. Can poultry be put in the freezer after it’s been cooked?

Freeze away. Fried chicken will keep in the freezer for 4 to 6 months, while cooked poultry dishes will last for about 4 months in the freezer.

12. Can I drink a bottle of beer that was left open overnight?
Technically, sure, go ahead. The beer won’t be toxic or anything, but if you could muster up the energy to go over to the fridge and open up a brand new bottle, you’ll save yourself the not-so-fun experience of ingesting flat, raunchy, morning-after alcohol.

13. Does ice cream ever go bad?
It’s hard to believe that something this good could ever go bad; but just like Lex Luthor, ice cream, too, will eventually cross over to the dark side. Although it doesn’t have a set shelf life, this frozen goodness will eventually grow a layer of fuzzy ice droplets that give it a coarse, icy texture and just take all the fun out of eating it. The jury’s still out on when this occurs, but depending on the condition of your freezer, it could be anywhere from 12 days to 12 months.

14. How many days does delivery pizza last?
See all those boxes of half-eaten pizza strewn around your living room floor? Yeah, you might want to think about throwing those out. Delivery pizza in the box will last for about 3 to 4 days in the fridge, but should be terminated faster than Kevin Costner’s career if left at room temperature for over 2 hours.

15. Do Twinkies really last indefinitely?
Sure they do, and the tooth fairy really did leave all those quarters under your pillow. Sorry, Twinkies do not, in fact, defy all the laws of food storage. They have a shelf life of about a month, and this relatively lengthy shelf life is due to the fact that Twinkies contain no dairy products.

16. If the power goes out , how long will food last in the freezer and fridge?
You have several hours before total starvation begins to set in. If the fridge door is kept closed, food will last for about 4 to 6 hours, and will remain edible for about 1 to 2 days in the freezer.

* The ugly truth about mold: Mold is not your friend. Yes, it may be soft and fuzzy, but it is not, by any means, friendly. Mold can cause allergic reactions and sickness. If your food has grown that familiar greenish/grayish/bluish fur, kiss it goodbye. The only moldy foods that can be salvaged are hard cheeses and firm fruits and veggies. In these cases, cut the moldy areas away and enjoy.
* Better safe than sorry: Avoid strange encounters of the food kind. Resist adventurous urges, and throw away any food that looks or smells suspicious. This type of shady food item belongs in the garbage, not in your stomach.
* Expiry date rules can sometimes be bent: “Best before…” is not a hard and fast rule; it is merely a very strong suggestion in regards to when to discard the food in question. And although this date doesn’t necessarily mean you need to throw away said food, if the food looks shady, throw it a big old farewell party.
* Storing temperatures: Take charge of your food storage facilities. Make sure your freezer is set at or below 0°F, and the fridge is set between 34° and 40°F to slow the growth of harmful human-hating bacteria. Once you’ve decided which foods are freezer-worthy, tightly wrap freezer-bound food in a plastic bag, let all the air out of the bag and tie it to avoid freezer burn. If it’s not the fridge or freezer, make sure your storage location is cool and dry.

Lesson of the day: Don't keep food too long! Eat em while you can! =D

10 funny flirting facts
By Laura Schaefer

So you’ve mastered the eye-contact game and can beckon a cute prospect with a few coy glances… but do you really know all there is to know about the fine art of come-hither? Just to make sure you’re up to speed, we culled some very surprising info that you can use to your advantage. Read on for some juicy tidbits that may up your cute quotient in no time.

1. Flirting is good for you. Studies show that people who flirt have higher white blood-cell counts, which boost their immunity and keep them healthy.

2. Think it ends at a little eye batting? Hardly—all told, scientists say there are 52 “flirting signals” used by humans. Of these, the hair flip is the most common.

3. In some places, flirting is illegal. In Little Rock, AR, an antiquated law is still on the books warning that engaging in playful banter may result in a 30-day jail term. In New York City, another outdated law mandates that men may be fined $25 for gazing lasciviously at a female; a second conviction stipulates the offender wear a pair of blinders whenever he goes out for a walk.

4. Why wait for Happy Hour? Lots of people get their flirt on during their morning commute. A full 62 percent of drivers have flirted with someone in a different vehicle while on the go, and 31 percent of those flirtations, it turns out, resulted in a date.

5. Flirting need not occur face to face. According to Pew Research, 40 percent of people who look for love online say they can easily flirt with someone via email or IM.

6. In the Victorian era, fans were the ultimate playful prop that could communicate all sorts of messages. A fan placed near the heart meant, You have won my love. A half-opened fan pressed to the lips suggested, You may kiss me. Hiding the eyes behind an open fan meant, I love you, while opening and closing the fan several times warned, You are cruel. Given how much a fan could come in handy, it’s a shame they ever invented air conditioning.

7. These days, cell phones do the flirting. In one survey, half of all mobile phone users have texted suggestive messages to keep things interesting while away from their amour.

8. Watch out, you can overdo it. According to the Social Issues Research Centre, the most common mistake people make when flirting is maintaining too much eye contact.

9. Sometimes, flirty gestures aren’t what they seem. Research has shown that men tend to routinely mistake friendly behavior for flirting.

10. Flirting is universal. A woman living in New York City and one in rural Cambodia may not have much in common, but when it comes to attracting a little attention, they both employ the very same move: smiling, arching their eyebrows, then averting their gaze and giggling. Animals flirt, too: Birds, reptiles, and even fish have their own way of strutting their stuff. Moral of the story: If the simple sea bass can act cute to enhance a romantic agenda, you can, too—so give it a go!

Inevitable...

Death is inevitable, you never know when you're gonna go. It could happen anytime, anywhere. Yep, can even happen when you're homeward-bound on an express bus on the north-south highway. It's really sad how things are taken lightly in this country...the crackdown on bus drivers with summonses was a hot topic, but one really wonders if any action was taken at all!

I've been worrying alot lately, about the projects to be done, about whether I can actually graduate (or deserve to graduate) and loads more...I don't usually worry, or at least don't show that im worried, but lately I've been kinda down...I really do think 5 years in uni is too long, especially when I don't really learn that much..and I only have myself to blame for that. I don't even know if im gonna be a mechanical engineer in the future after I graduate.........cant even sleep properly sometimes cause i'll be thinking "how to make the vehicle more stable" or "how long should the handlebars be". damn!

stuff on my table
The view of my workspace

I posted up that picture to show u how messy my table is now. Been reading Rupert Everett's book 'Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins'. Yeah he's gay n stuff but he's really good looking! And British! mwaahahha. Quite an interesting read really. And then there's the measuring tape for estimating the handlebar length. The rest r usual stuff..hahaha...

can't wait to go back for CNY!! mwahahahahha! lepak lepak lepak! woohoooo! If anyone of you readers plan to come to Ipoh let me know k! Come to muh houseeeee =D

From overheardinnewyork.com:

White People Come to Understand Hip Hop Very Gradually Indeed

American: Americans call the last letter in the alphabet 'zee,' but in Britain they call it 'zed.'
Swede: Oh! That's why Jay-Z is pronounced 'Jay Zee' and not 'Jay Zed'!

Football mania!

It's been good.

It's been great!

Cheering for Sao Paolo, that is. It's been a great journey, cheering for the team, whose members I don't know personally except for a few. We've (me n my homie - name witheld for privacy :P) been cheering since last year! This year we've been to all but one match, and we even skipped one class to watch a match! (shhh....don't tell the lecturer!) The final match was highly strung, full of tension and screaming supporters. (Some, who come to support for the first time and are not familiar with football....and then make noises at the wrong time....=_="...haha)I even shook hands with some of the players, and they must be thinking "who are these people?? suddenly showing up from nowhere!!"

Sao Paolo rocks! I might be biased, but that's what supporters are for! =)

And for this girl, the journey is just as important as the end. You win some and you lose some. Sao Paolo u guys rock!!!

On a syok sendiri note, I can't imagine myself as a footballer's girlfriend, but a girl can always dream, right... ;)

ooh ooh i wanna join the karnival sukan mahasiswa! wanna run! wheeee~~

Sometimes there's that sharp pain that comes when im walking, and it comes as sudden as it goes....damn weird...probably just wants to remind me that im not invincible and I need to be more careful and walk properly...hahaha

The net here sucks so bad, my MSN cant even connect long enough for me to change my pm. And then now I can't download files from rapidshare. It's forbidden. Whatever happened to internet freedom?? Jeez...

Eat Your Way Slim in 20 Simple Steps

Eat Your Way Slim in 20 Simple Steps
The real secret to healthy eating? Good habits. Here's how to start right now.
By the Editors of Prevention (msn.com)

From the instructions for some diets, you'd think losing weight was more complicated than quantum physics. The food diaries you need to write; the nutrition labels you need to read — and pronounce and translate; the protein, fat, and carbohydrate grams you have to add up. It's time to try an easier way. No math, no more squinting at the fine print and trying to decipher those words with no vowels. Instead, just 20 everyday tactics that will get you started on your weight loss plan and then help you stick to it. Soon enough, your diet will simply become the way you eat.

1. Always eat dessert

Yes, always. "A small amount can signal that the meal is over," says Barbara Rolls, PhD, author of The Volumetrics Eating Plan. She ends her meals with a piece of quality chocolate — and she's a doctor. Other options include mini-cupcakes or fruit.

2. Blot out the fat

You can use a napkin to blot a teaspoon of fat off a pizza slice. That may not sound like a lot, but multiply it by a slice a week, and that's more than a whole cup of fat you won't eat — or wear — this year.

3. Take the beltway

When junk food beckons, tighten your belt a notch. Not so you can't breathe, but so you have a gentle reminder of the size you'd like to be. "The scale isn't the only measure of weight," says Roberta Anding, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

4. Go public

Enlist the help of coworkers, friends, and family — and know they're watching. "The power of embarrassment is greater than will-power," says Stephen Gullo, PhD, author of The Thin Commandments.

5. Get spicy with it

Capsaicin, the substance that puts the hot in hot pepper, temporarily boosts your metabolism. Just make sure you're drinking a yogurt lassi with that searing-hot chicken vindaloo. Dairy blocks capsaicin's sweat-inducing signals better than water.

6. Milk it

Consuming 1,800 mg of calcium a day could block the absorption of about 80 calories, according to a recent University of Tennessee study. Jump-start your calcium intake by filling your coffee mug with fat-free or 1% milk, drinking it down to the level you want in your coffee, then pouring in your caffeine fix. That's 300 mg down, 1,500 to go.

7. Go organic

That's where you're likely to find bread and cereal with fiber counts that put the conventional choices to shame. Thought you were doing well with your 3-g-per-serving Cheerios? Nature's Path Slim blows it away with 10 g. (And it really doesn't taste like a shredded shoebox.)

8. Splurge on precut veggies at the supermarket

Sure, they cost more, but you're more likely to eat them. "Make low-energy snacks as easy as possible," Rolls says. "Keep vegetables as near to hand as you can. Make it so you have no excuse."

9. Practice fine dining

Pick a restaurant where you'll actually want to linger. "When the meals are not hurried, the presentation is beautiful and the portions are reasonable so you can regulate your attitude," Anding says. That means your body — not the empty plate — will tell you when to stop.

10. Don't skip your 3 pm feeding

"Have a 150 calorie snack [now], and it can save you 400 calories later," Anding says. An ounce of nuts or two sticks of string cheese weigh in at about 170 calories.

11. Increase your a-peel

Speaking of fiber, a lot of it's in the peel, whether it's potatoes, apples, or pears. Even oranges — don't eat the whole peel, but keep the pith, that white stringy stuff; it's packed with flavonoids. More nutrients, more fiber, less labor.

12. Drink with your dominant hand

If you're circulating at a party, Rolls suggests keeping your glass in the hand you eat with. If you're drinking with it, you can't eat with it, can you?

13. Plate it

Whatever it is, don't eat it out of the container and don't bring the container to the couch. "Part of satiety is visual," Anding says. "Your brain actually has to see the food on the plate, and when you reach into the jar, or the box, or the bag, you don't see it." If it's worth eating, put it on a plate. Eat what's there, then stop.

14. Keep your hands busy

Find a way other than food to work off your nervous energy. "It's behavior modification," Anding says. "Instead of grabbing a bag of chips, you pick up your knitting. Art works, woodworking works — anything that occupies your hands."

15. Take 10

When your mind strays from your desk to the vending machine, it could be hunger — or it could be boredom or irritation with your boss. If you're still thinking about snacking 10 minutes later, then you're probably hungry. Think of it as a chance to have one of the nine servings of fruits and vegetables you need each day.

16. Go out for ice cream

Or an eclair. Or even guacamole and chips. Just go out. Don't keep your danger foods in the house. You can't eat half of a carton of ice cream that's not there.

17. Start with salad

It's the holy grail of dieting — eat less by eating more. Rolls's research has found that eating a salad as a first course decreased total lunch calories by 12%. Avoid the croutons and creamy dressings, which have the opposite effect.

18. Just scrape by

Always order your bagel or burger with a plastic knife. Use it to scrape off the excess cream cheese and mayo. You could shave off as many as half the calories.

19. Send back the bread

All it takes is a wave of the hand, a smile, and a "No, thank you."

20. Go crazy — sometimes

Deprivation won't make you thin — or happy. Designate a meal or two a week when you can eat absolutely anything you want.

Breakfast cereal with low-fat or fat-free milk

A large bowl of cereal in the morning will set you up for the rest of the day. Most cereals are vitamin and mineral fortified, and they're great with fresh fruit sliced on top. Cereal is fine as a prewalk snack or a postwalk pick-me-up.

Energy bars

They're tasty and come in all flavors. Choose from high-carb, 40-30-30, or protein-plus bars. Tear one open prewalk or postwalk.

Dried apricots

These chewy little morsels are low-fat and high-carbohydrate, and provide a decent amount of vitamin A, fiber, and potassium. Toss chopped apricots over your granola at breakfast, or eat whole ones before your afternoon workout or as a sweet treat after dinner.

Fig bars

Chewy fig bars are a tasty, convenient source of carbohydrates and fiber. The carbs in these cookies are quickly digestible, making them great "on the run" snacks. Have them anytime, even during the middle of a walk when you need to refuel.

Smoothies

If you use fruit and fortified soy milk, smoothies are an easy way to consume a healthful dose of fiber and soy. Smoothies also furnish plenty of vitamins C and A, plus potassium, fiber, and calcium. They work well for breakfast, before a walk, or as refreshing, reenergizing, postwalk snacks.

Frozen fruit pops

This refreshing low-calorie treat is loaded with vitamin C, which fortifies your immune system and boosts iron absorption. They're great anytime, but best immediately after a long, hot walk.

Bananas

They're chock-full of carbohydrates. They are also a good source of vitamin B6, which is vital for managing protein metabolism. (Exercisers need more protein during and after workouts.) Eat them before, during, or after exercise. They taste great blended into a fruit smoothie.

Green soybeans

Soybeans in any form are a high-quality source of protein, iron, B vitamins, and heart-healthy isoflavones (which also boost bone health). Soy protein has been shown to lower risk of heart disease and cancer. Nosh on them after your workout or as a low-calorie but filling afternoon snack.

Low-fat fruit yogurt

It's a great source of calcium, protein, and potassium, plus it's low in fat and fairly high in carbohydrates. The live and active cultures in yogurt will also boost your immune system. Enjoy it anytime.

Oatmeal

Studies show that oatmeal helps lower cholesterol. Oatmeal will also fill you with plenty of carbohydrates to boost energy and alertness. It's an excellent prewalk or morning meal.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If only I had a powerful blender....then i would be making loads of smoothies! wahahahahaha

I wonder if i'll get to lose some weight....and build more muscle...hahaha
