10 Jobs for Quiet Workers

10 Jobs for Quiet Workers

By Rachel Zupek, CareerBuilder.com

You can't help it -- you like your alone time. If you had it your way, you'd be at home most of the time, alone with your thoughts, your computer and your DVR. The time spent actually talking to anyone but your cats would be minimal.

Unfortunately, the real world exists -- one in which working from home is sometimes an option, but more than likely, you have to go to work.

If talking, socializing and general forms of human interaction aren't your thing, you probably loathe the idea of working in a cube where the chatter never stops, or in an office where your primary duty involves using your voice.

If you'd rather hone your quiet skills than your voice box, here are 10 jobs that let you work how you do best: alone.

1. Automotive service technician
Why it's quiet: Automotive service technicians have an intimate relationship with one thing: cars. Aside from a short conversation with clients on "what seems to be the problem," service technicians spend most of their time under the hood of the vehicle.
Salary*: $37,622/year

2. Cost estimator
Why it's quiet:
Cost estimators keep to themselves as they analyze everything from blueprints to proposals to determine the cost of a potential project from start to finish. They do their best to nail down costs on things like materials, labor, location and duration of the project to determine if business owners or managers should make a bid for a contract.
Salary: $53,413/year

3. Interior designer
Why it's quiet:
Though interior designers need to initially meet with their clients to determine their wants, needs and budget constraints, most of their time is spent alone as they focus on decorating. They choose styles and color palettes; and pick furniture, artwork and lighting. Many interior designers work as consultants or are self-employed.
Salary: $45,524/year

4. Librarian
Why it's quiet:
It might seem obvious, but given that librarians work in a mostly "no talking zone," it makes sense that a librarian position suits quiet workers. Most of your time is spent organizing and maintaining library publications and materials, and the rest you'll spend directing people to whatever they may need.
Salary: $48,025/year

5. Medical transcriptionist
Why it's quiet:
These guys don't talk; they listen. Medical transcriptionists copy recordings made by physicians or other health-care professionals into medical reports, correspondence or other materials. They usually listen to recordings on a headset and use a foot pedal to pause the recording when necessary. Many medical transcriptionists telecommute from home-based offices.
Salary: $31,251/year

6. Network systems analyst
Why it's quiet:
Network systems analysts don't consult much else except their computers as they design, test and evaluate computer systems like local area networks, wide area networks, the Internet and intranets. As networks expand, telecommuting is common for computer professionals because more work can be done from remote locations.
Salary: $40,827/year

7. Survey researcher
Why it's quiet:
The primary role of survey researchers is to find out what people think. Rather than interviewing people face to face, they design and conduct surveys via the Internet, mailed questionnaires or telephone interviews. Typically, they work alone writing reports, preparing charts and sifting through survey results.
Salary: $27,478/year

8. Translator
Why it's quiet:
Translators read written materials and translate them from one language into another. Because this position requires so much reading, writing, editing and analyzing, translators usually work alone. Many translators work from home and 22 percent of interpreters and translators are self-employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Salary: $42,229/year

9. Undertaker
Why it's quiet: With all due respect, your closest company in this profession is dead. Other than communicating with the family of the deceased to direct the funeral, you are pretty much guaranteed silence most of the time you work.
Salary: $42,278/year

10. Writers, authors and technical writers
Why it's quiet: In the movies, we always see writers escaping to their beach houses, lodges in the mountains or sometimes a haunted hotel -- remember "The Shining"? -- for one purpose: to write a novel. It's not just a stereotype that writers and authors need peace and quiet to work (trust me, I know).

Technical writers are particularly quiet and concentrated, as they focus on putting industrial and scientific information into layman's terms. Remember that simple five-step instruction manual to put together your dresser? A technical writer made those directives as basic as possible, which was probably not an easy task in itself, but was made easier by solitude.
Salary: $42,786/year and $55,707/year, respectively

C'est mon anniversaire!

No no...not some other anniversary, it's my BIRTHDAY!! :D

I am now 22! I feel old! I need more calcium!!

Anyway on that day I woke up to text messages from alot of people (also had some who msged after midnight which I read before I slept). So many msges! And also lots of people who wrote on my Facebook wall (Friendster is not the 'in thing' anymore! I did get one message on Friendster tho). Replied everyone's msges and facebook msges all day! Wah!

Went for class and Harish gave me this:
Photobucket

Wait, is it Christmas??

Photobucket

Ta-daa! It's a scientific calculator!! :D Thanks Harish! :D (Mine died early this semester and I have been using WZ's old calculator...)

That night at Techflow they surprised me with 3 chocolate balls from Baker's Cottage! Don't ask me why, but it was kinda funny tho...haha...

On Friday night, Nina, Sarah, Edwin n I went to T.G.I.Friday's for a little dinner celebration. Left at 7pm and reached Sunway Pyramid at almost 9pm (including a short stop at Agnes' bro's place to get her car back)!

Photobucket

The cake they bought for me! Raspberry Cheesecake from Secret Recipe!! This year the message is "Go Crazy!". What's that supposed to mean? Hmmm...go figure!

Photobucket

Vanilla milkshake! So thick and ice-creamy :D

Photobucket

Grilled Chicken Fillet with Jack Daniel's Sauce (or something like that).

The tomato quarters were grilled perfectly and the mashed potato was heavenly!! Must try to make that kind of mashed potato! Chicken was kinda dry tho. But the sauce was good! We talked and laughed so hard we felt like throwing up! The weird part was how excited the waiters were to take our places! Even when we haven't finished eating they wanted to grab our plates! Had to hold on tight so that they wouldn't take our plates away! Later on the waiters sang Happy Birthday with the 3 of them and then asked me to give a speech. But anyway I din say much..haha..cause...I don't say much, remember...haha!

After that, we adjourned to McDonald's in SS15 (I think? dunno much bout Subang) because Edwin was supposed to belanja Agnes a McFlurry for her birthday which was 2 weeks ago. Lepak there and talk crap until about 1.30am (If I remember correctly), then sent Edwin back home and then we headed back to uni.

I also posted a wishlist on my Facebook Birthday Calendar(because Fb BC asked me to! :P)
Photobucket

I got a scientific calculator and lots of cake! Awesome rite!! :D

In conclusion, Facebook is awesome, I love my awesome friends and wishes do come true! :D

Oh yeah I celebrate my birthday for 15 days too so feel free to give me presents or belanja me makan :P

How to make Garlic Bread

Taken from StartCooking.com. Try it! :D

==============================================================

Garlic bread can be served as a wonderful accompaniment to pasta dishes, salads, soups — or even served as a snack food all by itself. It’s filling, tasty and soul-satisfying!

To be done properly, garlic bread should have nice crispy edges, and a warm, soft, buttery center. It’s that combination of textures that makes it special.

Ingredients Needed To Make Garlic Bread

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees

Put one stick of softened butter in a medium size bowl.

Crush one clove of garlic and add it to the butter.

Then add ¼ teaspoon of salt, 1/8 teaspoon of black pepper, ½ teaspoon of oregano and some parsley.

Mix this all together.

Now, using a sharp bread knife we are going to slice this loaf of Italian bread, making each slice about 1 inch wide. Slice the bread almost completely through.

Using an ordinary kitchen knife spread the butter between each slice, and on top of it.

Wrap the bread in the tin foil. Put the bread on a baking sheet with sides. (This will make it much easier to lift the hot bread out of the oven after it is cooked.)

Bake it on the baking sheet in your preheated oven for about 20 minutes.

Enjoy!

Garlic Bread Ingredients:

(4-6 Servings)

  • 1 loaf of Italian/French bread
  • 1 stick butter (8 tablespoons)
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried parsley

The T-mobile Dance

So cool!

Efficient?

Engineers are always innovative in trying to come up wit simple solutions for daily problems. Which is what I did. :D It might not be a pretty sight or look hi-tech, but it does its job well! Reheating spaghetti sauce while cooking spaghetti has never been easier! And less pots to wash too!

Photobucket
Stack em up...with a pair of chopsticks

Photobucket
Cover em up!

Yay! This method also saves energy (electricity) as I am using the steam from cooking the spaghetti to heat the sauce! :D

Note: Only applicable to those who do not have the appropriate steaming equipment. =P

Carrot cake!

A few weeks ago WZ said she wanted to eat cake. I sometimes have cake cravings, but then again if you ask me if I want to eat, I'd probably say yes! (Earlier I was kinda watching my weight, not eating unnecessary calories and stuff, but now I resumed my normal eating habits! I'll stick to exercising to maintain this shape (?), instead of eating less =P) She introduced this website where this guy bakes cakes and sells them. You order by sending him an email and then collect it from Bangsar/Damansara. It takes about 2-3 days to process. So far we've ordered carrot cake, and I think it's delicious! Homemade mah...hehe...It's very dense and filling (it has raisins :D)! We cut the cake into 8 pieces, but I think the portions will be just nice if you cut the cake into 10 pieces.

Photobucket

MmmmMMmMM...=D

Photobucket

The picture that has people drooling over on Facebook =P

We actually chose quite a few cakes, but we tried out the carrot cake first. After this we might get the Tiramisu torte I think :)

Check it out here! You can also check out his recipe page and blog here :D

UNITEN Graduation Night 2009

We had our Grad Night dinner on 6 Feb 2009. It was supposed to start at 7.30pm but we couldn't go early because we had Automation & Robotics test before that (5-7pm). Potong stim only. Anyway Sarah n I have no class on Fridays so we studied for the test. I tried, at least. Just memorizing whatever the lecturer emphasized in class. But still I think only 50% entered my brain cause I was not in the mood to answer questions (when am I ever in the mood??)

Basically we were taking pictures most of the time...and since our table was at the side we weren't blocking or distracting anyone when we took pictures. Excessively. haha! =P To see pictures just go to Facebook. I'm sure you've seen them by now anyway...hehe

Chap Goh Meh

Today is Chap Goh Meh (15th night of CNY), which is also known as the "Chinese Valentine". Why am I so semangat to blog about this? It's because "Wa Si Hokkien Lang!" (I am Hokkien) =P Yeah its mainly a Hokkien thingy...so read on to know what's it about =)

Taken from Wikipedia:
Chap Goh Meh or Tzap Goh Mei (Chinese: 十五暝; pinyin: shí wǔ wěi; literally "fifteen night") represents the fifteenth and final day of the Lunar New Year period as celebrated by Chinese migrant communities. The term is from the Hokkien dialect and refers to the fifteenth day of the first month, which is the occasion of the first full moon of the New Year.

The occasion is marked by feasting and various festivities, including the consumption of tangyuan. In traditional Chinese culture, it is also celebrated as the Lantern Festival or the Shang Yuan Festival. In Southeast Asia, however, it coincides with the Chinese Valentine's Day.[1] It is also when young unmarried women gather to toss tangerines into the sea, in a hope that their future spouse will pick it up – a custom that originated in Penang, Malaysia. In the past, this was also the only day that unmarried ladies could be seen with their partners.

----

Copied from a Facebook event:
Singles, there’s hope!

Are you cynical and single? Think that Valentine’s Day is a day made for couples at best and a marketing gimmick at worst? Well, cast your jaded thoughts aside and put on those rose-tinted glasses for a while. There is a day made just for you.

That day is Chap Goh Meh - the 15th and last day of the Chinese New Year. It was normally celebrated with family dinners, prayers and firecrackers just like the 1st Day. That is, until some romantic soul back in 19th century Penang decided to make something more out of it.

Back then, marriages were mostly arranged. Society was such that unmarried girls could not hang out nor be seen with guys. There were no Speed Dating, Lunch Actually and Match.com.

So, what’s a 19th century single to do?

Congregate around bodies of water during Chap Goh Meh – the only day where single girls were allowed to walk about the streets, that’s what. Hopeful guys and well-dressed single girls complete with their chaperones will come by the droves to the Esplanade in Penang. The unattached will cast coy glances and shy smiles at a cute member of the opposite sex when the chaperone is not looking. They will also throw symbolic items such as oranges and apples into the sea. If the thrown item is fished out of the sea by someone, it is a sign that the ‘thrower’ will make a good match.

This tradition of throwing something into the river grew like wildfire until it is widely practiced wherever there’s a lake, river, sea or jetty to be found at various parts of the country.

Chap Goh Meh Arsenal

Anyone, married or single can celebrate Chap Goh Meh and dunk in something into the water body. No one is left out (unlike Valentine's Day which can make the most stout-hearted single depressed!). But to partake in the festivities, you need to be equipped in one or most of the following. Remember, these items are specially chosen for their meaning in Hokkien, in the hopes that what you will reap what you throw into the water. They work best if the appropriate Hokkien rhymes are chanted as they are thrown. As to why the all the names of the items are in Hokkien, it is because Penang is predominantly populated by Hokkiens.

Item

Hokkien Word

Rhymes with:
Hokkien Chant

Mandarin Orange = Kam
Husband = Ang

Tim kam, chuar hor ang
(Throw an orange, get a good husband)

Apple = Ping Kor
Wife = Bor

Tim ping kor, chuar hor bor
(Throw an apple, get a good wife)

Banana = King Chio
Lottery = Bei Pio

Tim king chio, gia hor bei pio

Stone/rock = Chio Tau
Bangalow = Ang Mo Lau

Tim chio tau, gia tio ang mo lau
(Throw a stone, get a bungalow)

Peanut = Thor Tau
Old age = Lau

Tim thor tau, chiak lau lau
(Throw a peanut, you won’t starve when you are old)

Modernity Sets In

These days, the more assertive ones would even scribble their name and contact details onto the items before throwing them into the water. For that, permanent markers are recommended as they are water and smudge-proof. And while they are at it, they will also light up some hot-air lanterns with scribbled name and wishes. However, due to the potential danger these hot-air lanterns pose to aircrafts and being fire hazards, they are now banned in Malaysia. But this doesn’t detract from the joys of celebrating Chap Goh Meh.

Funny post on Everibodi Lafu Rojaks. Language there kinda teruk tho haha...

Happy Chap Goh Meh!
